NPA Fly-In Day 2023 Recap

Capitol Building

Following a four-year hiatus from Fly-in Day, the Natural Products Association members gathered in Washington, D.C., to meet with members of Congress and advocate on behalf of the natural products industry.

“This was a wildly successful event with great representation from our members,” said Kyle Turk, director of government affairs.

“Over the last four years, we have faced and overcome tremendous challenges. From ensuring the dietary supply chain was deemed essential during the COVID-19 pandemic, withstanding FDA challenges to NMN, NAC, and CBD, to protecting against mandatory product listing, which would’ve put the industry one step closer to being regulated as drugs, NPA’s members have exemplified what it means to be industry leads. The natural products trade is stronger because of their participation in events like fly-in day.”

Fly-in attendees met with Members of Congress and staff to educate them on the industry’s issues and natural products’ role in health and wellness.

Fly-in Day started in the Rayburn House Office Building with advocacy training. The training session gave attendees an outline of how to inform their elected officials best and prepared attendees for a successful lobby day with tools to build strong relationships with their lawmakers.

NPA members discussed essential issues for the natural products industry with lawmakers and their staff, including:

  • Modifying IRS rules to allow dietary supplements to be purchased through Health Saving Accounts, Flexible Spending Accounts, and Health Reimbursement Accounts.
  • Ensuring the FDA is exhausting its resources and the agency is responsive and accountable to the industry.
  • Enforcement against non-compliant products.
  • Strengthening the natural product supply chain through friend-shoring and reshoring legislation.
  • Establishing a regulatory pathway for CBD as a food and dietary supplement.
  • And much more.

Attendees met directly with lawmakers and congressional staff from their districts and states to educate them on the natural products industry and current issues. During these meetings, attendees shared position papers provided by NPA to make certain that offices were fully informed on the current issues in the industry, and on the health and economic benefits of natural products.
