Senate Appropriations Committee Requests USDA Ease Devastating Rules on Hemp Industry

NPA Declares Victory Following Comments Warning Against Rule in October

WASHINGTON – The Natural Products Association (NPA) declared victory and praised the Senate Appropriations Committee for requesting that the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) ease rules that could have a devastating impact on the U.S. hemp industry.

NPA’s comments submitted in October can be viewed here.

“This is a positive development and we are pleased to see that policymakers followed our lead so we can avoid the devastating impact the proposed rule would have on the domestic hemp and CBD industries,” said Daniel Fabricant, President and CEO of NPA.  “While other industries are looking to move away from a reliance on China, this proposed rule hurts American businesses. Rules like this one proposed further create an environment where our farmers, manufacturers, processors, and small businesses are at a competitive disadvantage to the Chinese.”

To extract CBD or other cannabinoids from federally-compliant hemp, the hemp must first go through an extraction process which often causes a temporary increase in the concentration of THC.  Placing these restrictions on U.S. hemp and CBD manufacturers would increase the reliance on products manufactured in China.
