FDA Commissioner Comments on GMO Labeling

FDA Commissioner Comments on GMO Labeling

Says agency plans to finalize guidance on voluntary labeling soon

The FDA Commissioner, Margaret Hamburg, appeared March 27 before a House Appropriations subcommittee to address the budget for her agency for FY 2015. In response to a question from one of the Committee members regarding the agency’s stance on GMO labeling, the Commissioner said that the FDA continues to support voluntary labeling of products, indicating that GMO ingredients do not change the material content of the product. She went on to say that the agency plans to finalize voluntary GMO labeling guidance soon. Finally, she noted that the GMO labeling issue is of concern to Americans, and that while the agency has not found safety risks with food containing GMO ingredients, the matter deserves further discussion and study.
