Navigating the Landscape: Understanding Permissible Claims in Dietary Supplements
This informational webinar will provide an overview of the regulatory framework governing permissible claims for the dietary supplement industry in the United States, focusing on the roles of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). The three main regulatory designations for dietary ingredients will be highlighted and examples provided. Practical and compliant structure function language will be shared alongside non-compliant language which has garnered warning letters.

Speakers:
Katie Banaszewski, Senior Director of Quality at NOW Foods, strongly believes great things are never done by one person, but by a team of people. Driven by curiosity and her passion for science, she joined NOW in 2013 with a plan to transform the analytical capabilities of their labs from just being one of the industry’s best, to being the most capable in-house testing lab, by far. During her tenure at NOW, she has led the development and implementation of a routine pesticide residue monitoring program, among other achievements. She plays an integral role in continually expanding the company’s analytical capabilities. Katie focuses on recent issues within the dietary supplement industry and ensures NOW remains the industry leader in holding high quality standards.
Kristen McPhee, M.S. is an herbalist, nutritionist, published author, and substantiation researcher and is currently a Botanical & Nutrition Scientist at NOW Foods. In her role, she is responsible for providing the company with scientific and regulatory expertise and conducting botanical and nutrient ingredient evaluations for new product concepts. In addition, Kristen develops structure-function claims and product label text and offers training on dietary supplement regulations for the industry. Kristen holds a Master of Science in Therapeutic Herbalism and a Certificate in Nutrition and Integrative Health from Maryland University of Integrative Health (MUIH).
